Letting standards slip
Here’s the first post from our newest panel member. Mum of 2 Rebecca Metcalf, from Beetroot and Gherkins , shares how her attitude to housework may have relaxed slightly since having kids. Maybe…
Now anyone that knew me BC (don’t look at me blankly- you know, Before Children!) would say that I was a bit of a Monica. I liked things clean. A place for everything, and everything in its place.I became animalistic in my cleaning rituals during my pregnancy with Monty, regularly hauling my bump onto steps in the kitchen, standing on the work surfaces (I know- the irony!) to clean the tops of the cupboards. On many a pregnancy insomnia addled early hour I could be found cleaning and tidying, I am talking bleach at 4am!
This continued after having Monty and my evening ritual before falling into bed after a full on day with a small baby was to hoover and mop the floors. I laugh at this now, as Monty didn’t even crawl until he was fourteen months old and the world really would not have ended if my kitchen floor wasn’t bleached! But bleach it I did.
Fast forward to the next bump, whilst pregnant with Blossom I once was found hoovering the decking in the garden and I also used to hoover the kitchen worktops.
So obviously now, as a Mother of two my house is immaculate right? WRONG!
Standards have slipped and I am currently doing an impression of a hamster on a treadmill about to have a heart attack.
Cannot. Keep.Up.
The washing pile is taller than my children (if they stood on top of one another!) There are dust bunnies doing the can-can under my sofa and I definitely haven’t hoovered the decking in a very long time.
In fact, as I am on a roll in my slummy mummy confession booth (forgive me readers for I have sinned!) I am going to let you in on a few things which may or may not have happened since Blossom was born.
Not saying they have. Just talking rhetorically here. Ahem.
During a nappy changing incident around 3am a certain little flower named newborn may have pooped mid change, covering some distance, covering some of the bed sheet. Someone may have just grabbed a towel and slept on that instead of changing the sheets. Maybe.
Someone may have screamed at what they thought was a mouse under the sofa but on investigation found out it was a cluster of yoghurt coated raisins. Covered in mould. Fluffy mould. Maybe.
Someone may have worn her pyjamas all day more than once as well as not bothering to get the kids dressed at all. In fact pj days may be becoming a bit of a habit.
But you know what? As much as I cringe as I type this, life is too short. And dull women have immaculate houses. Or else they have a cleaner. Out source for excellence and all that!?
Do you let things pass that you would never have done in your life before kids? We’ll be choosing one person who comments to win a BornFree Twist N’Pop Straw Cup.
UPDATE 08/02/11 Congratulations to Gail! A Twist N’pop is on it’s way to you x

I am glad that you have written this. To many moms aim for perfection and miss out on the joys of running around in pjs with their kids. Good for you!
Testify!!!!!! Ahmen to this blog, finally a mum like me who us willung to admit some of the horrors we let pass, you are officially the idol we will be worshipping in our quite frankly messy home!
We have a 2 year old but to look at our home you would think my brothers 5 boys lived here.
Ahhh brilliant comment s you two thank you for making me feel a little less like I am going to catch fleas from my grubby home!
Hoovering the decking! You weirdo!
I’ve never been very domesticated, I am little miss messy but I have a new tactic these days – it’s the only way to stay on top with my little one hell bent on distraction.
It’s called Fake Cleaning. Simple. You open a cupboard, drawer or um, the spare room, yes a whole room, and just shove everything in there and then close said cupboard/drawer/room.
House feels tidy. Everyone’s a winner – well until the in-laws come to stay unexpectantly anyway.
Children need to be around dirt, its good for their immune systems. End. Of. Another fabulous blog post of you doing everything to keep your children at the peak of healthiness!
Claire xx
You are sooo right! I’m a mother of three and I find it almost impossible to keep up with the washing and ironing – do not even think about cleaning, mopping, hoovering… Thank you for writing this!

Well done for being brave enough to admit to the sins we’re all guilty of
You’re right though – life’s way too short to care all that much.
(That said, every time I’ve been to yours It’s been super tidy!)
