Spring into Spring

7 April 2011 No Comment

We are sticking firmly to our Spring theme this week and are very happy to share this joyful post about how to make the most of it from our newest Parent Panel mum Jen Walshaw, aka Mum In the MadHouse.

The sun is out and it feels like spring is here in my little patch of North Yorkshire and after our long cold and dark winter we are keen to get out and about, so I have some great ideas for things you can do with your children that don’t cost the earth and will encourage their love of the great outdoors.

Go for a walk in the woods and marvel at all the snowdrops and the signs that spring has arrived.  Make sure you take a bag with you and let the children collect treasure to make pictures or collages with when you get some.  Don’t forget to pack a large flask of hot chocolate though, as it can be cold in the shade.

Go rock pooling or collecting shells on the beach.  The beach doesn’t need to be a summer only event.  Make sure that everyone has wellies and that you take a change of clothes for little ones just in case of mishaps.   There is nothing like a bag of chip shop chips eaten out of the paper on a fresh spring day at the seaside.  You can always make rock monsters http://www.muminthemadhouse.com/2009/08/stone-bugs/  with any you bring back or just start a rock collection.

Feed the ducks.  Take any leftover bread you have and go on a walk and feed the ducks.  We are lucky to have a pond only 3 minutes away, but it is one of the things my boys adore doing and I would only throw the bread out anyway.

Get on your bikes.  Why not dust off your bikes after the winter, make sure that the tyres are all pumped up and go on a family bike ride.  If you children do not yet have their own bikes, then get a seat for yours to add them on to.  Or perhaps all go out for a scoot round the local neighbourhood.

Plant some seeds.  Why not make a start on any seed planting you have.  You could give little ones some cotton wool and cress seeds which do not take long to germinate and will encourage them to wait for any other seeds that you might have planted.

Go on an adventure.  Even a normal walk becomes much more interesting for a child if it is called an adventure.  Go to a different park than normal, try counting sheep, spotting birds or daffodils.  Make getting out and about fun for everyone.  Make sure you pack snacks and drinks for everyone and enjoy the sunshine.
