Share Your Birth Story
We’ve dedicated May to Pregnancy Awareness Month and we now have birth on the brain! Babies come into families’ lives in so many different ways and whether your baby was born in a hospital, via homebirth, waterbirth, in a moving car, or from your heart (adoption) we’d love to hear your story!
My first baby was born in a hospital birthing pool and to me it was a most wonderful experience which I wrote about here. My next 2 births were both elective sections because of the 3rd degree tear injuries I had sustained during my 1st child’s birth, but they were no less wondrous and beautiful.
As much as we prepare for a baby, there’s no way of knowing how our little ones will decide to make an entrance or what other factors beyond our control will influence their birth. I’ve heard of babies being born in lifts, taxis, supermarkets, after days and days of labour…so many different experiences.
One person who shares their birth story with us will win a £25 credit to our online shop babybornfree.co.uk

UPDATE 01/06/11 A huge thank you every one for sharing your beautiful stories. We’re very pleased to announce our winner is Carly H. Congratulations Carly xx

i’ll go first , with my son i was taken in to be induced on the friday . all night i was having strong contractions and moved to delivery ward on saturday morning. during the day , although my pains very strong and regular i wasnt dialating or progressing and by sunday early morning ,my little one had gone into distress and i was told i needed an emergancy c-section.
as soon as they told me i was sick everywhere , i think it was the shock!
i was took into theatre and had my little one under general anesthetic . he was born at 4.32 am and weighed a whopping 10lb 1oz. he’d got stuck and caused a heamorrage in his eye and his head has been scared from where he was stuck , he also needed resuccitating so im a way i was glad i was asleep or id have been terrified.
i awoke at 9am and didnt know what id had or where he was as he’d been taken by the nurse to be cared for. he cried for ages when you picked him up because of his head
my daughter was an elective c-section , but as id gone into labour she was moved to an emergancy section too. she was 3 days early and weighed 9lb 6 so another little whopper.she had a ‘true knot’ in her chord so was a good job id had a section., i had her awake and preferred that as the recovery was much better
Thanks for being our first birth story teller Nicci and pretty dramatic stuff too. Your first labour sounds like blimmin hard work
and fancy your daughter making her entrance before her section date! xx
My son was due on Xmas Eve but was born 4 days early.
My contractions started at 3am and they were about 45 seconds to a minute apart; my husband actually thought I was joking as we were both expecting them to be a lot further apart.
I got my husband to call the hospital but of course the midwives need to speak to the mother but with contractions a minute apart I really was not in the mood to speak.
The 5 minute journey to the hospital took what felt like forever due to the icy roads and minus 10 temperatures.
Once the nurses had checked me they said I wasn’t even a cm dilated and would have to go home but as they had me hooked upto monitors they said they weren’t too happy with his heart rate and told me they would be admitting me. They checked me again about 30 minutes later and I was 4cm dilated but my son was still in distress and they said they wanted to do a c-section but my son had other ideas and within about another 30 minutes or so I was fully dilated and before I knew it I had to push. I was using gas and air and it gave me a weird out of body feeling, it was as if it wasn’t happening to me.
I had to have an episiotomy as he got stuck and they also used forceps. My whole labour took 2 hours and 5 minutes and my son was born weighing 5lbs 7oz. He was floppy and didn’t cry immediately, I kept screaming at them asking why is he not crying, then he let out this little yelp and I felt such relief, all I could do was cry with happiness.
My son ended up spending 5 days in SCBU as he had low sugar levels and I got the best Xmas present in the world when we were allowed to take him home on Xmas Day.
Joni, what a beautiful story, thanks so much for sharing xx *wipes tear from eye*
Here is my birth story with my logan – will have to find my other birth story i have saved on the laptop
I went into hospital to be induced on june 11th 09
Got there for 11am had my bp taken and all the usual checks on monitor etc and eventually the midwife came along at around 1pm and told me she was taking me to delivery suite for my waters to be broken.
After that was told to walk around the hospital and if nothing was happening id be put on the drip at 3pm (not the nicest of feelings walking around dripping lol – i never had that with lexi as her waters went so near to the birth)
Went back to delivery suite and nothing was happening so they got everything ready to put the drip in. It took them 45 mins to get the canula thing in my hand due to my rubbish veins and the hand (the hand they were unsuccesful with is now nearly black and a lot sorer than the one they did)
By the time they had done that the midwife came back to say sorry after all that we cant put you on the drip at the moment as their is a more urgent labour in progress who’s baby is in distress and they didnt want us going to close together as their wasnt a lot of staff on – fair enough but obviously I was pretty gutted.
I was put back on monitor in delivery suite and we were given a tv to watch to help pass time.
Time passed – I got more and more fed up and upset
I started to get a bit achey during hollyoaks and then it came on very very quickly – I pressed the buzzer to get some one in – No one came – I sent David out to get some one and it took 10-15 mins to actually get some one in with us – I think they must have thought i was making it up as I wasnt screaming the place down lol.
Was put on monitor and suprise suprise it picked up 5 contractions in 10 mins and i got my gas and air on! I told midwife at same time to get me some pethedine NOW as I thought she was going to just disapear so I got that pretty quickly!
A different midwife came in to take over at around half 8 for staff change over.
Theres not much to say about the labour really as it was all the same from start to finish very fast contractions not a lot of build up.
I think I controlled myself quite well in the pushing I was so desperate to not need stitches – I did exactly what I was told and panted etc when he was coming out rather than the one huge push like i did with lexi. I think the gas and air helped a lot for this.
Logan Steve Reynolds was born at 8.54pm on 11/06/09 weighing 7lb 1oz.
On my discharge notes it says 1st stage labour was 1hr35mins, 2nd stage 4mins and 3rd stage 7mins! So very very quick and didnt need the drip!
He is doing great – he is 46 cm in length which is shorter than lexi was!! Very little of his clothes fit him. He is in some of Lexi’s vests which are supposed to be for a 3lb baby and even they look big on him (dont quite know how they decide they will fit a 3lb baby!!!)
He is very calm so far and doesnt seem to mind big sis poking and prodding him!
Not a bad induction story really – shame about the hospital staff though
My birth stories are nothing compared to the others I have read but I’ll tell the story of my first birth as that is the more interesting. It all started when I went for my regular 33wk check with my MW. I arrived as usual flustered as I really didn’t like going to see my mw just incase she said she wanted some blood, I’m not one for needles and usually end up on the floor, anyway, I had all the usual things checked, bp, urine, bump size. After which she expressed concerned with regards to my high bp and that I had a rather large amount of protein in my urine, so much so that she phoned the hospital and made an appointment for me to go into be checked the following day. Well to be honest I didn’t think much of it until the wednesday when they hooked me upto a monitor to check my bp and had a scan of the placenta. The next thing I knew I was given a steroid injection and told that I would not be going home and that my Daughter would be coming by section the following day. That’s when I felt totally out of control and scared. All I could think about was my daughter, would she be ok, could I hold her and see her. The next morning I was taken down to theatre for my section, my daughter arrived at 10.19am amongst gasps of Oh she is tiny, which didn’t concern me to much as I had been told that she would be around 4lb anyway, so imagine my surprise when they quickly showed her to me before being whisked away to nicu/scbu and told that she was 2lb11oz. I was then taken upto the high dependancy unit and didn’t see my daughter until she was three days old and hooked up to all sorts of machines. She came on leaps and bounds and came home after spending six weeks in nicu/scbu weighing a still tiny 3lb12oz. She is now a very happy, healthy nine almost ten year old who dotes on her six month old baby sister who arrived at a more respectable 39wks and weighing 6lb2oz
My daughter was 8 days early suprising us all (as everyone says you almost always late with your 1st!) I was due to give birth in Hereford hospital but we were over visiting family in Cheltenham. My husband was a bakery manager at the time and worked early so when he woke at 2am to get ready I noticed I had lost my plug. So off he went to work I was fine but then the contractions started and had to call him home at 4.30am with his reply being “can I not just finish this rack of rolls first?” He got back and we arrived at the hospital at 5.10am I dont think the staff thought I was going to give birth anytime soon as they gave me gas and air and left me too it. As the midwife was filling in some details I had the urge to push and out popped my daughter! as I was on my knees she hit the bed before anyone could catch her causing her and myself to go into shock, I was shaking from head to toe as she was taken away to be given a little extra help. She was born 25/11/07 6lb 3oz and perfect
My son on the other hand was 2 days late and all the way through my pregnancy they tried to get me to have a home birth as my 1st was so quick and living 25 mins away from hospital they were concerned I might not make it, but I was not keen and said it would be fine. 2days overdue and at 4.30am i woke to go to the bathroom. my husband jumped up to see if i was ok as he had been nervous leading up to my due date let alone now i was 2 days over due! I was having slight stomach ache so we decided to get our daughter up and take her to his mums and go to the hospital to get checked. we arrived at the hospital at 5.20am and was told the labour ward was full and I would have to go into a side room leading off the maternity unit! as I got onto the bed the midwife examined me and said I was already 8cm dialated! along came the gas and air and next my son at 6.50am and a whopping 8lb 5oz born 25/04/11!
Both my children were born on a Sunday both on the 25th day of the month and within 35mins of each other! crazy
xxx
Hi Nikki, wow your boy didn’t hang about once he got started! Thanks for sharing your story xx ps hope Logan has a lovely 2nd birthday on the 11th!
Hi Alison, thank your for posting your story-what a little fighter your girl was but those first so few months must have been so tough for you! Can you believe it was all that time ago now? Congrats on baby number 2 too xx
Katie, your story gives me goosepimples! I can’t get over how quickly your children popped out and how much the births have in common. Fantastic tales to tell the grandkids xx
My 2 babies came into the world relatively easily.
Baby #1 was 4 days late and my husband was convinced today was the day so worked from home. During the afternoon I got backache – but then it went away. And again, but then it went away. Finally he convinced me I was actually in labour by about 2.30pm. Phoned hospital who said wait until they were 3 mins apart then call back. Over the next 30 mins they got quicker and quicker and worse and worse – we didn’t phone – we just jumped in the car and went.
Midwife led unit took my blood pressure – way too high – and made me walk all the way to the labour ward…. can’t remember much detail apart from a doctor examining me and saying ‘ahh look her membranes haven’t ruptured yet.. hang on .. splash … there they go’ and went off to change his clothes. Doctors / midwives were trying to take bloods at one point and ask me questions – husband said ‘shall I turn the music down darling so you can hear what the doctor is saying?’ … my reply ‘no – make them shout’ bless ‘em – they did shout!
Eventually on just gas and air and a lot of Michael Buble, Jai arrived at 10.50pm
Baby #2 – I awoke 4 days before my due date… ouch my back hurts.. oh no it’s fine now. And again – my back hurts… no wait.. it’s ok now. Took a little convincing from my husband that I was actually in labour – again – you’d think I’d remember!
Was finally convinced to phone labour ward – told them contractions were 2 mins apart and was told to come in straight away – remember complaining that it was sunny and I wanted to sit in the garden – enjoying a rare moment with no kids to look after (Jai was with my in-laws). Was told in no uncertain terms to get myself to the labour ward right now – so I did.
Arrived at 1pm and waited while a room was prepared. 1.30 made it into the delivery suite. Senior midwife, junior midwife and visiting american midwife .. took my blood pressure while american midwife talked me through relaxation techniques – brilliant I could stay in midwife led unit. She massaged my back while I stood up holding onto my husband for each contraction. I then asked for the birthing pool to be filled – they started the tap running but mouthed to my husband that there really wasn’t time..
Somehow managed to change into a nightie and just in time as I had a strange urge to push a baby out – expecting the midwives to say ‘no hang on it’s not time yet’ – was very surprised when they said yes go ahead! In the meantime a towel had been shoved up my husbands t-shirt so it was warm and smelled of daddy. 10 mins of pushes and out pops baby. I was still standing up. Unbeknown to me junior midwife asks senior midwife how to catch the baby. Senior midwife says ‘you don’t it just hangs there’. Husband trying not to alert me to this while trying to stay calm and be almost crushed to death by my using him as a support….
So there was a new baby wrapped in a towel, still attached to mummy, held in my arms as I stand there and gingerly peel back to reveal… it’s a girl!
And it’s only 2.35pm. I finally get to sit down.
Goodness Rachel your husband has got some amazing insinct for knowing when your babies are ready to appear! Thanks for sharing your lovely birth stories xx
Well it all started when i was 32 weeks pregnant and i was having awful braxton hicks at work then i came home a ‘pop’ my waters broke!! i was in a right state but the hospital managed to stop my labour with these magic pills lol! I had the steriod injections and had to be moitiored every other day and take antibiots because of infection. I was in hospital for a week after that then I was induced at 34 weeks because my blood tests were showing signs of infection. I was induced at 9am and spent the next few hours trotting about the hospital with nothing happening. So come 3pm they decided to connect me to the drip to induce labour more quickly as i wasnt dilating at all. I ended up having an epidural because he was prem I wasnt allowed pethidine or gas and air as these can affect breathing. So after I was given the epi i had a lovely sleep then at 4am I still hadnt dilated much so they were considering a c-section. So i went bk to sleep then woke up at 7 with a very strange feeling down below and I was ready to push lol!! He was born at 8.05am on the 25/6/10 weighing 5lb 9oz at 34+1 weeks. He was taken down to the neo natal ward as he was cold and grunting, he stayed there for 2 weeks then he came home
when people say you forget the pain of labour you really dont I still remember the pain now its awful lol! xxxx
Haha Keeley, I know what you mean about labour pains, it’s amazing us mums ever get around to having more kids after the first! Thanks for sharing your birth story xx
My daughter was due on 19th June 2010. I had an amazing pregnancy & only had a little bit of morning sickness but heartburn was a killer! I drank Gaviscon like it was pop! lol. Anyway…My due date came & went with not so much as twinge! I was getting really frustrated so when I went to see my midwife at 40 weeks & 4 days she did the sweep – or at least attempted to do it! She couldn’t reach! Said my cervix was too high! So I was booked into the hospital to be induced the following Thursday (1st July). The following Wednesday came & I had started to get some pretty bad stomach cramps. By the Thursday they had gone! I went into hospital to be induced but had to be put on the monitors for a few hours – The results kept showing that baby’s heart rate kept dipping so then I had to wait even longer for a doctor to come & check! They said it was fine so I was transferred up to the labour ward where I was put on a ward with 3 other ladies (whom I am great friends with now!) My Sister had accompanied me to the hospital as my oh was working & didn’t want to start his paternity leave until I was in full labour. He arrived at the hospital around 6pm with my Mum. By 9pm I was still on monitors so all visitors had to leave. A midwife came around to my bed at half 9 to check how far dilated I was – 1-2cm! Whoop! lol. She then gave me the pessary tablet to induce me & I was then left to have a good nights sleep as I was to have my waters broken the next morning. I didn’t sleep a wink! At 7.30am Friday 2nd July I had my waters broken! It didn’t hurt though! But that triggered my contractions! They came thick & fast & I was in so much pain! My oh had decided not to go to work on the Friday so he was waiting by the maternity doors at 9am to be with me. I was eventually taken to my own room when all of a sudden my contractions stopped! I was well confused. My MW came & checked me again & I still hadn’t dilated anymore so she told me that if I hadn’t progressed within the next 3 hours I was to have the drip in my hand! After 3 hours & alot of gas & air as my contractions had set in I was checked & had got to 3cm…So in went the drip! My daughter didn’t take too kindly to that & her heart rate was constantly dipping! By around 7-8pm I was in so much pain I begged for the epidural! Which I got! By 2am the midwife was very concerned as I had only got to 6cm & Megans heart rate was still dropping. She went from 149 down to 29 a few times so it was decided there & then that I needed an emergency c-section! The thought of this made me sick – I projectile vomited everywhere! Poor midwife had to clean herself up & me! My Mum & oh were practically crying with worry! I was rushed down to theatre & all I could think was OMG Im going to meet my baby very very soon & I’m going to be a Mummy! My oh came in theatre with me & at 4.49am Saturday 3rd July my beautiful daughter Megan was bought into the world weighing 6lbs 10.5oz! She had huge blue eyes & lots of hair! She was perfect! I was stitched up & went to the recover room where I fell to sleep! 3 days with no sleep had taken over! I was woke up by my oh 15 mins later who was stood by me holding our daughter with tears in his eyes! I stayed in hospital for 4 days after as Megan had a bit of Jaundice & had to go on a billybed & they also found a little hole just above her bum so they wanted to scan it! Turns out to be nothing to worry about though. Best & worst experience of my life – but i’d do it all over again tomorrow! She’s nearly 11 months old now & I just love her so so much! <3 My world xx
I went to the labour ward on 23rd dec to be monitored for reduced fetal movements again and was told as it had been the 3rd time i had been admitted that they wanted to induce me the next morn to bring on labour just to be on the safe side, i was sent home for the night and told to ring in the morning at 8 am which i did and was told to go in after my breakfast so off i went (24th dec) with all my stuff struggling through the thick snow! When i got to the hospital i was admited to the induction ward where i was monitred for a while.
At 1.20pm the midwife insterted propess into me to try start labour and i was left as it could have taken upto 24 hours. Me and OH spent the day on the induction ward bored and he was sent home at around half 11 after me havin pethadine for the pain and becoming upset that OH had to leave me on xmas eve but after the pethadine i fell asleep for the night still nothing happened until 7.30am xmas morn when i went into labour after havin my waters broke for me, at 815am after been called down OH arrived and we went straight to delivery as i was 5 cm allready and after many cramp sessions and lots of pushing Natalie arrived at 10.19am on xmas morn with her cord wrapped round her neck 3 times which was scary as she dint cry but she was ok and was handed over to me after been given a little air.
She weighed 6lb 12oz and is perfect in every way possible, we were home by 6pm xmas day!!!!! It was a very good experience for my first baby and am over the moon! We even got our local newspaper come round to take our pic for there paper for having christmas day baby!
I had an appointment and at the appointment they did a membrane sweep. The next day at around 12pm i lost my mucus plug. After i lost my plug i started having cramps. I didnt think it was anything, but since i lost my WHOLE plug i went out to run a few last minute errands. Throughtout the day my cramps turned into contractions. I also started to feel them on my back. So when i got back home i wanted to speed things up so i started walking around my block until i couldnt take it no more. I packed my stuff and went to the hospital. When i got there it was exactly 12am. My contractions were 3-4 minutes apart. They admitted me into the hospital and started me on the pitocin. It was horrible, but after 2 hours i finally got my epidural. After i got my epirdural about 45 minutes later my water broke. Then after my water broke and the nurse came in i was fully dilated. I was ready to push. I pushed for about 10 minutes then my son flew out! (literally he popped out) They squeezed the placenta out, and stitched me up. My son was born at 4:41am weighing 6 pounds 15 ounces. Shortly after i got post partum depression BAD. I couldnt hold my son which was what hurt me the most. After 2 weeks it slowly went away and now i love him with all my heart, he’s my everything.
What an amazing story Samantha, it sounds like your baby girl was certainly worth the wait xx
Thanks for sharing your Christmas baby story Shelley, and how fab that you made it home on the same day and even got in the papers! xx
Emma, thanks for sharing your story and for talking about your pnd as it’s something that effects so many mums. xx

For my second child i was so nervous about going overdue and being induced, as with my eldest the induction had resulted in a hard labour and forceps assisted delivery. However I was in B&Q a day after my due date, getting some spare screws for the cot, when i started to feel a twinge, a few hours later i was having regular contractions so went to have a warm bath and called my husband, he came home from work and drove me to the hospital. There i made it clear to the midwife i wanted as natural a birth as was possible, she then suggested a waterbirth, which i had never really considered! I agreed, and the birthing pool was filled for me as soon as I got in I felt more relaxed and the water really helped with the pain of the contrations and helped me breathe through them! Nine and a bit hours after the first twinge my darling daughter Elizabeth Rose was delivered into the water and handed to my husband to cut the cord! I would definately reccommend a water birth! Not exactly painless but definately a more relaxing way to give birth than being rectricted to a hospital bed!
Hi
My 1st baby was due 21st Feb, but 10 days early I woke up at 3.45am, needing the toilet, after i got back in to bed and settled down, then at 4am I thought i needed the toilet again, so on my way to the toilet i thought i’d wet myself and got a little upset that it had come to me weeing myself, only to wake my partner as i was in pain, who then asked me if it could be my waters (OH YES, so it was LOL) so we got in the car and made the journey to the hospital.
We arrived and was told that it was my 1st baby and generally it is 6 hours labour (average). so they put me on the bed and checked all was fine, to find i was already dilated. My little man was born naturally, with a little help from gas & air at 7.12am, weighing 6ib 7oz, just 3 hours and 12 minutes from getting out of bed. My partner was there throughout and cut the umbilical cord
My 2nd little man born
woke at 8am and had him at 10.22am, weighing just under 7lb, naturally with gas & air (i also gave birth to this little man on all 4′s and had him delivered and laid down in front of me and got to cut the umbilical cord x) hubby there throughout (married by this one)
My 3rd little man born
started labour at 3.15pm and had him at 4.45pm, weighing 7lb exactly, naturally with no pain relief, hubby there and cut umbilical cord
I am so lucky to have 3 very enjoyable short births, (still every bit as painful LOL) These are fond memories of the day my boys came into the world. Each one I cherish!!
Kelly
Our 2nd baby we had been told we could never have after ttc for 5 years was due to be born the 15th of December 2009,the day came and went with nothing happening (with my 1st child arriving 10 days late this did not surprise me!) on the morning of the 17th I woke up suddenly and realised it was a contraction that had woken me YAY!!! I spent all day bouncing round the house on my birthing ball and waiting for my husband to arrive home from work, towards the evening they had started to get more painful and closer together so once my husband was home I rang the maternity ward who told me I sounded like I was coping well so to stay at home for a couple more hours! So I got in the shower then got ready, changed all the bed sheets lol and did my hair and make up,by now I had decided that I wanted to leave for hospital so I rang my mum and dad who live 10 minutes away to come over and look after my son,an hour and a half later they arrived……. with everything going on I had forgotten the weather forecast and not looked out the window, there was such thick snow on the ground everywhere was totally white,it soon became apparent that we would be going no where without some help,I had to call for an ambulance, the ambulance arrived 2 hours later after getting stuck themselves and being rescued by a tractor,I suffer from a blood condition so the only other option of staying at home and having the baby there wasnt an option at all we had to try and get to hospital. We set off (very slowly) just after 11pm at around 1am the ambulance ground to a halt,we were stuck in the snow and could go no further,it was suggested that we could knock on the door of the pub that was nearby but when we realised where we were it suddenly dawned on me that one of the playground mums had just moved to where we were stuck so we went and knocked and asked for help,by now it was gone 1am and poor Vicky & paul got a real shock to find me,my husband and an ambulance crew on their doorstep! They took us in and made us all warm drinks and then the ambulance crew told us that they had called to see if they could somehow get a midwife out to where we were just incase, around 2am and midwife arrived to us and promptly set up a home delivery kit though no one was keen on it with my blood problem it was decided that a last ditch attempt should be made to try and get to the hospital…..though not in the ambulance, the way the midwife had arrived to us was in the 4×4 of the head of the ambulance service and thats how I would be travelling we set off and ended up going cross country as the the roads were too bad it took a long time but the crew were all fantastic and we FINALLY got to the hospital (though not the one I was meant to be giving birth at!) in time for my daughter Olivia to be born safely inside in the warm
she is our little snow fairy and the day she was born will always be a story to tell,I am pregnant with another little miracle at the moment who is due in 4 weeks……..hmmmmm I hope it doesnt snow in june!
Sounds like a beautiful calm birth Jennifer, thanks for posting xx
Hi I had a really horrible pregnancy with alot of problems with my blood pressure throughout and was in and out of hospital like a yoyo,I had a midwife coming out to my home everyday and had to go to hospital every Thursday for a checkup, I had 2 weeks of my pregnancy left on the 7th June 2001 when I went in for a checkup my blood pressure was through the roof that day so they decided they would take me up and start me of, At 12.10pm when they checked I was already 4cm dilated, I was in labour for 4 hours, My son Daniel was born at 4.15pm weighing 5lb 6oz, Unfortunately I hemorrhaged really bad afterwards and needed five blood transfusions I cant really remember much as I was drifting in and out of consciousness alot, I never got to see my son till two days after his birth, When my son was two weeks old I hemorrhaged again and had to go into hospital for a D&C as there was still parts of the placenta in my womb, This experience has put me of having anymore children even though I have been told every pregnancy is different I really would’nt chance having anymore.
Oh my goodness Kelly what lovely quick labours you had, those boys were in a hurry to get out and see you xx
Wow! That was an adventure and a half Carly, thanks so much for sharing it and best of luck with number 2 xxx
