Teething Tales

7 June 2011 10 Comments

Here’s our Parent Panel mum of 5 Amy talking about how she’s learned that children go through teething in different ways but how despite this there are ways that as a mum she can still be prepared.

Teething is one those things that all our gorgeous babies have to go through. It’s awful seeing your little bundle in pain or grizzly because of impending tooth growth. The best we can do as parents is try to arm ourselves with a few little tricks up our sleeves to help our little ones deal with it as smoothly as possible.

The thing is with teething there are all sorts of other conditions that can come with that pesky tooth coming through. I’ve encountered temperatures, nappy rash, dribble, sore gums and of course a sore mouth with all of my five children.

As we all know, all children are different, my eldest daughter would have a night of screaming before said tooth outage. I couldn’t console her, I tried everything: calpol, teething gel, teethers with gel on it, you name it I did it and she still cried. It was exhausting for her and me, but like clockwork the offending tooth would appear the next day. This is in comparison to my second eldest daughter who would go to sleep and wake up with four!!! Yes, this little one popped out teeth like they were nothing, not a whimper or a temperature, nothing, she’s a tough cookie that one!

Nothing is cuter than that little white roughness sticking up from those pink gorgeous gums when your baby grins at you. It’s a big milestone and always a special occasion. My son Freddie turned one last month and he has 8 little pearly white teeth, he has one of his big ones coming through as well. He tends to be grizzly and unsettled before a tooth shows itself. I think it’s important to learn the signs of your baby; by observing them and noticing certain patterns you can to try to preempt the tooth’s arrival and get the calpol and teething gel at the ready.

I’m also experiencing the other side of teething with my eldest: we’ve had the Tooth Fairy here and now she is sporting a lovely gap where her two bottom teeth have fallen out. My little girl is growing up!

Here’s to many more visits from the Tooth Fairy and the rest of Freddie’s teeth coming through smoothly.

Teething with my Daughter was a breeze, I didn’t know she had them until she smiled or opened her mouth for food and they would be there! She was a very late teether, not getting her 1st toothy peg until 11.5 months and her last just after her 3rd birthday!!! the Dentist couldn’t believe it.

But with my son its a different story! He also didnt get his 1st tooth until 11 months but before it came we had crying, clingyness and swollen purple gums :( He is now 13 months and still only has his bottom 2!! his top gums have been swollen for at least 3 weeks and he crys when eating hard things. we are currently using Ashton and Parsons teething powders and Anbesol liquid which seems to work well, and he’s also spending alot of time on my back in his carrier but I just wish that it would cut through!

I hate seeing him so grumpy when he’s usually such a happy go lucky little chap. But like everyone says every baby has to go through it so just got to keep them close and comforted x

My son started teething at four mths, one didnt pop out untill 11mths. Then they came two at a time, was awful. He hated most teethers so cucumber was my saver straight from the fridge. There is so much more out there now for teething ~ Amazing!

Teething can be a hard time for both baby and parent. I’ve always used teething powders which work a treat. Teethers that can be put in the fridge/freezer and a good aswell.Try and keep your babies chin and around the mouth dry as they may get a rash from the dribbling. Most importantly remember that it is very painfull for babies and lots of cuddles help :)

Great post! I’m a mummy of 2 and my lil’ girl seem to be suffering with the first teeth a lot more than my son did :(
I’ve tried all the usuals, teething gel’s, powders, calpol etc and although they do help in part she was still suffering so much so after speaking to some mummy friends, I purchased a baltic amber teething anklet, my lo has been wearing it for a week now and is calmer already! She’s still showing other signs of teething, (dribbling a lots and chewing on everything) but doesn’t seem to be in as much pain! :) She still loves biting/gumming on her silicone soothers too!

The only thing that worked for my little one was amber teething necklaces, I got mine from http://www.wildsheep.co.uk

They work by releasing natural oils from fossilised tree resin when in contact with the skin, the oils are analgesic and help calm and relax the baby. Besides, they look gorgeous!
