Cooking with children and baking with babies

1 July 2011 One Comment

We love this post from Jen aka Mum In The Madhouse, it’s a lovely simple activity to do with your kids and will help them develop so many skills, as well as providing the whole family with a tasty treat. Enjoy!

How young is too young to spend time in the kitchen?

I am a great believer in getting my children involved with cooking and baking and both my boys have spent time in the kitchen with me since they were tiny and I introduced them to baking from about 12 months.

Now at nearly five and six, they can make the batter for Yorkshire pudding themselves on a Sunday and also measure out all the ingredients for pizza bases on a Saturday.

So I thought I would provide you with a really simple egg free biscuit recipe that you can make with your children.  It is a very forgiving dough and doesn’t mind being handled, so is perfect for little hands and the fact that it is egg free means you do not need to worry about it being eaten raw either.

Easy Peasy Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 140g Self raising flour
  • 110g Margarine
  • 40g Sugar – granulated or caster
  • ¼ – ½ tsp Ground ginger

Method

  • In a mixing bowl, mix all ingredients together until a soft dough is achieved.
  • Lightly roll walnut sized pieces of mixture in your hands and place on oven tray(if you wish to use a cookie cutter then wrap the dough in cling film and place in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling out on a floured surface.)
  •  Flatten slightly with fork and bake for about 20 minutes at 180c – or until golden brown in colour (depending on your oven)
  • Carefully remove and place on wire cooking tray to cool
  • EAT AND ENJOY!!

What age did you start cooking or baking with your little ones? What do you and your tot enjoy making together in the kitchen (apart from a mess)? We love hearing from you so we’ll be sending a formula dispenser/snack pot to one person who comments to say thanks.

I’ve cooked with my son ever since he was able to stand on a chair at the work surface! He’s only 2 and a half but he loves watching mummy cook and getting involved himself – his favourite is definitely chocolate crispy cakes and helping to spoon the mix into the paper cup cases. The only problem then is he doesn’t want them to go in the fridge, he wants to keep them out to keep an eye on them…. :)
